National Council

The National Council for Media and Public Affairs is an advisory body for the School of Media and Public Affairs (SMPA) at The George Washington University. This important initiative brings together leaders from across the nation to address issues impacting the growth and enrichment of the school.

The Council meets twice annually and maintains no fiduciary responsibility, serving as a body of goodwill ambassadors for the school.

Council members are expected to:

·         Participate actively in advising the SMPA Director on issues relative to the future of the School.

·         Assist in acquiring financial and other resources necessary to ensure SMPA’s programmatic growth.

·         Attend at least one meeting of the Council each year.

·         Identify and recruit new members.

Term

Members of the National Council for Media and Public Affairs serve a two-year term, synchronized with the University’s July 1 fiscal cycle. Members may serve up to three consecutive terms.

Nominations

Nominations for the Council, which should take into consideration the expectations for membership, are submitted to the SMPA Director. Nominations will be considered as received. Vacancies on the board will be filled as they arise.

Structure

The council serves as a committee of the whole, breaking into focus groups to address specific issues. The body is lead by a chair and a vice chair. The chair serves a two-year term; the first year is spent as vice chair and the second as chair.
