Background

Harvy Lipman is Director of Special Projects for The Chronicle of Philanthropy, where he creates the company's computer-assisted reporting capacity; develops, researches and writes major projects; and is in charge of four national surveys conducted annually. He is also the projects editor for The Times Union in Albany, N.Y., where he develops investigative reports, in-depth series, and computer-assisted reporting efforts. In fact, he created the paper's computer-assisted reporting capacity, which for the first time provided the news staff with access to databases and software to aid reporting efforts.

Initially handling investigative reports and computer efforts as a projects reporter, Lipman has been with the Times Union since 1985. From 1992 to 1997, he was the paper's state editor, overseeing coverage of the state government and writing on major political and state policy issues. Prior to the Times Union, Lipman was a producer and news writer for CNN's Washington, D.C. bureau and a news writer for the District's WJLA-TV, where he wrote and produced evening news segments. A reporter since 1974, he began his career with the Courier-Express in Buffalo, N.Y.

He has received numerous awards for career excellence including five New York State Associated Press Awards and three Hearst Writing Awards. He was also presented with the 1993 Distinguished Public Service Award from the Rockefeller College School of Criminal Justice for several series he produced on the New York criminal justice system's dealings with issues of race and mental illness.

Lipman also taught journalism and computer-assisted reporting courses as an adjunct professor at State University of New York at Albany from 1997 to 1999.
