Is SMPA for Me?
The School of Media and Public Affairs has all three of the qualities a homebuyer loves: location, location and location. And if you're applying to colleges, a homebuyer is what you are. You're looking for a home for an important time in your life. You're looking for location.
We have it.
- Washington is the political media capital of the world, and SMPA is in the heart of the city.
- Our new building, opened in March of 2001, is just blocks from the White House.
- News stories, internships, networking opportunities, career contacts--all are at most a subway fare away when you enroll at SMPA.
- If politics and policy debates are your passion, SMPA has a lot to offer you.
Look around. The headquarters of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund are both in the neighborhood. The U.S. Capitol and the Supreme Court are a few subway stops away. You can walk to the Washington Post's main offices on 15th Street, as well as to the Washington bureaus of most major American newspapers and television networks.
Our natural focus is on politics and policy. Our journalism program, for example, emphasizes reporting on U.S. politics, international affairs, science, technology and medicine. Our political communications department--the nation's only degree-granting program in this field--explores the role of information in the political system and identifies communications strategies that work.
Our faculty is wired in Washington. On the Journalism faculty are top-level veterans of news organizations like the New York Times and NBC television. They bring to SMPA not only their own expertise but also their contacts. The same is true of Political Communications, where the faculty includes political scientists who are experts in public diplomacy and military affairs.
As a school devoted to teaching theory as well as practice, SMPA also has on its faculty distinguished historians, communications analysts and film experts. The school also maintains research institutes, such as the GW Center for Survey Research and the Public Diplomacy Institute.
If you're looking for a well-rounded approach to issues in media and public affairs, we may well be the school for you.
Did we mention that we have location?
