It's not about understanding how to communicate. It's about understanding the medium and how to use it.

| - | CNN anchor, producers broadcast live from SMPA U.S. high schools join in remotely
CNN broadcasted live to high schools across the country Thursday morning from the School of Media and Public Affairs’ Jack Morton Auditorium.
The hour-long program, entitled “Behind the Scenes at CNN: America Votes 2004,” was aimed at informing high school students about how television journalism works during an election year, and featured CNN anchor Daryn Kagen, as well as producers from several other political news shows. A live studio audience of high school students from the Washington area attended the event.
The program included questions from students in the studio audience, as well as phone calls from high schools across the country. These questions were answered by CNN’s Congressional Correspondent Ed Henry, who joined the discussion via satellite from Capitol Hill, as well as by a panel of CNN producers, which included Keating Holland, director of polling for CNN, as well as Paul Steinhauser, producer of “Inside Politics.”
Many of the questions brought on by students concerned the level of influence that the media has in the electoral process. Susie Su, producer for CNN’s “The Capitol Gang,” gave her opinion on media influence, stating that the coverage “undoubtedly had some impact, because people based their opinions on the news they were receiving.” She went on to add that this was not a negative impact, because it “helped people make decisions.”
Senior political producer Sasha Johnson, who spent the entire election season on the road with the Democratic presidential campaign, followed up, saying, “with the advent of CNN, Fox News and internet news, viewers exert a lot of influence over the media” because they have a choice of who to get their news from.
Viewers were also treated to live, behind the scenes footage from the Atlanta control rooms, as well as a live tour of the CNN Election Express bus, given by senior executive political producer, Sam Feist. The bus, which traveled across the country this election season, had been the location of interviews with the former Democratic nominees Sens. John Kerry and John Edwards. After the program, students in attendance were given an opportunity to personally tour the bus, which was parked on H Street outside the SMPA building.
Students from Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland stayed after the program for lunch and further discussion with members of the CNN panel. Micah Benons, a senior at Eleanor Roosevelt, expressed her appreciation for attending the event. She said the program was “very educational as a whole” and provided “lots of different aspects of TV news.” Members from her television production class as well as the student government were selected to attend the event.
CNN’s behind-the-scenes look at the election coverage process was broadcasted live to over 2,500 students from 38 high schools in 17 markets.
