The Documentary Center at the Center for Innovative Media sponsors a
wide-range of programs devoted to documentary film. Our centerpiece
educational offering is the annual six-month Institute for Documentary
Filmmaking that runs from January through June..
We also offer specialty programs such as our prestigious International Emerging Filmmakers Fellowship and our custom Global Digital Media
Workshops. Further, Documentary comes to DC audiences through our
Center Screen documentary showcase, and through our collaborations
with partner organizations such as Docs in Progress and Women in Film and Video. Finally, you can see Documentary Center produced
award-winning films across all platforms at home and abroad.
Who We Are
Nina Gilden Seavey Director
Nina Gilden Seavey is the Director of the Documentary Center and its founder. She has been a filmmaker and film educator for more than 25 years. Her films can be seen in theaters, in film festivals, on television, in museum installations and on DVD across the globe. Her work has won many awards including an Emmy, the Erik Barnouw Prize for Best Historical Film of the Year, and the Golden Hugo. Seavey also served as the Founding Director and Executive Producer of SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival, the largest documentary festival in the US.

Natasha Lili Klauss, Assistant Director
Natasha has served as the Assistant Director of The Documentary Center and its Institute for the past 8 years. Raised in the rich scenic culture of Africa for most of her childhood, her passion for documentary began early on through photography then videography. Over the past decade, her personal credits include CNN, Bunim Murray Productions, National Geographic, Discovery, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Brave New Films and Free Speech T.V.
Kris Holodak, Production and Editing Instructor
Kris Holodak is a freelance videographer. Recent clients include, The Kennedy Center for The Performing Arts, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the Albany Institute of History and Art. In the last seven years she has shot and edited over 400 short format videos on topics ranging from the history of the NSO to the installation and performance of a major fireworks event.
Guest Instructors
The Documentary Center's guest instructors have included a host of non-fiction award winning filmmakers, academics and practitioners such as, Kevin Downs, Brian Breger, John Grabowska, Ross Spears, Kerric Harvey, Tomas Lennon, and Andrew Berends.
