“The Vietnam War was the longest and most unpopular war in which Americans ever fought. And there is no reckoning the cost. The toll in suffering, sorrow, in rancorous national turmoil can never be tabulated. No one wants ever to see America so divided again. And for many of the more than two million American veterans of the war, the wounds of Vietnam will never heal.”
PBS-Vietnam Online

The Vietnam War was a major turning point in Schieffer’s life as a journalist. He talked his editor at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram into allowing him to go to Vietnam to cover the war. Schieffer’s return from Vietnam ignited his celebrity fame and status as a reporter. His success at Vietnam landed him a job at a local television station in Fort Worth, which initiated his career in broadcasting. A few years later, Schieffer relocated in Washington, DC, always wanted to work at CBS, eventually was hired there, and has been there ever since!
