China and Hollywood

Young Reporter

In January of 1972, Thomas became both the only female and only print journalist to accompany President Richard Nixon on his break-through trip to China. No President had formed any relations with the communist country in over twenty years. Thomas later recalled the journey as her greatest experience, an eight day period where everything seen was a story, a goldmine.

In the years after China, Thomas accompanied Presidents Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and George W. Bush on numerous trips around the world. She covered every world economic summit, and became a White House legend not only in the press, but also in Hollywood through cameos in films like The American President.
