Communications Internship @ New America Education Policy Program

New America’s Education Policy Program (EPP) seeks applicants who have a strong interest in communications, public policy, web content, and analytics for our paid Fall 2018 communications internship.

The communications intern will assist our communications manager in extracting key information from our research and composing communications plans, media pitches, press releases, media lists, and website content. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical and writing skills in their applications and an interest in the public policy issues relevant to New America and Education Policy.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter, detail-oriented, has excellent writing and verbal skills, and has some experience or interest in public policy, media relations and PR, and journalism.

Responsibilities

  • Work 40 hours a week in our downtown D.C. office
  • Help the communications manager write communications plans, media lists, pitches, and press releases for programs studying a variety of timely education policy issues
  • Assist in the management of EPP’s social media accounts
  • Monitor press coverage of New America, and assist in capturing all media mentions in our Salesforce database
  • Conduct research and analytics projects to help New America assess its impact
  • Update and ensure consistent quality of content posted to the New America website
  • Provide as-needed staffing support to education policy events
  • Undertake various short research and writing projects, and light administrative duties as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Excellent writing and communications skills
  • Intellectual curiosity, motivation, and a desire to learn on the job
  • Applied media relations experience and demonstrated interest in policy issues relevant to New America are preferred
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills
  • Experience or interest in website editing and CMS
  • Strong attention to detail, together with excellent organizational skills and time management
  • Prior experience in Salesforce, Google Analytics, and/or email marketing platforms a plus
  • Some technical expertise—in areas like design and editing (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop); mapping; data visualizations; or coding (HTML, Javascript)—is a plus

Additional Details

We will provide an hourly rate plus a travel stipend

We are looking for evidence of how you can communicate complex ideas in straightforward, intuitive ways, so include a writing sample and examples of any other previous work that may be relevant to the position (graphics design, visualizations, charts, social media strategies, etc.) Candidates without at least one writing sample will not be considered. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. The ideal candidate would be available to start in mid-to-late August.
