Communications Internship @ Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States

Since 1964, SIECUS has been advocating for the rights of all people to accurate information, comprehensive sexuality education, and the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive health services. They believe that sex education is a powerful vehicle for social change. Their focus is on advancing comprehensive sexuality education as a means of building a foundation for a long-term culture shift that will positively impact all levels of society, particularly issues of gender equity, sexuality, sexual and reproductive health, consent, personal safety, and autonomy. SIECUS applies an intersectionallens to ensure people’s real lived experiences inform our policy, education, and strategiccommunications work.

The internship will be offered for an estimated 25-30 hours per week. These are paid positions with a minimum stipend of $3,000. The internship is flexible in start and end dates, but require a minimum ten-week commitment. It is intended for current students or recent grads of both undergraduate and graduate programs.

SIECUS Communications internships are available part-time and full-time during each semester and summer in our Washington, D.C. office. With the fast-paced, never-a-dull-moment nature of their work, they are looking for interns who can balance both big picture thinking with precise to-do list checking. Self-starting, creative, and, most importantly, passionate candidates are encouraged to apply.

Communications interns will assist the SIECUS team with a variety of activities including, but not limited to:

Responsibilities

  • Tracking news coverage of federal, state, and local stories impacting sex education and sexual and reproductive health and rights more broadly
  • Developing and scheduling social media content for a variety of channels
  • Creating and implementing strategies to grow, engage, and track SIECUS’ digital audiences and overall performance
  • Creating and maintaining media lists and drafting pitches for members of the media
  • Assisting with special projects as needed

Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of federal and state government processes in the U.S.
  • Previous public policy and advocacy experience and interest
  • Previous professional experience in team and/or office settings
  • Superb analytical and writing skills
  • Excellent communication skills (interpersonal, organizational, and public)
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills and software
  • Commitment to the SIECUS mission
  • A sense of humor
