Communications Internship @ Sickle Cell Patient Advocacy Organization: Sick Cells

This position is a part-time, unpaid internship of 10-15 hours per week.  As an intern, you will be part of a team that is shaping the public discourse on sickle cell disease. 

This is a unique opportunity to gain insight of the operation of a startup nonprofit, while contributing to public awareness and knowledge of one of the most misunderstood diseases in the world.  

As an intern, you will develop skills in management, fundraising, Microsoft software, business development, and research.

Responsibilities

  • Social Media Management (60%)
    • Develop and implement social media strategy 
    • Research and write social media content, including tweets, blogs, newsletter items, Canva banners and promotions, etc.
    • Create monthly content calendars
    • Manage social media resources (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn) 
    • Review and highlight sickle cell stakeholder interviews to advance designated themes. 
    • Work with community members to create Instagram takeovers
    • Attend local DC events to run social media accounts (where applicable)
  • Creative Support (10%)
    • Manage website design update and modifications
    • Oversee design of business cards and other organizational materials for Sick Cells staff
  • Organizational Support (30%)
    • Communicate with potential business partners and donors
    • Schedule, prepare for and record minutes of meetings
    • Draft monthly reports
    • Assist with special projects

Qualifications

  • Energetic and responsible
  • Some college education
  • Excellent organizational skills with high level of attention to detail and follow-up
  • Multi-tasking skills are essential
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to interact with all levels of internal and external management
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information
  • Desktop personal computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a small team
  • Knowledge of and experience with social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat)
  • Knowledge of Canva programs

This volunteer position will require 10-15 hours a week and weekly, in-person meeting with Sick Cells’ President in Washington, DC.
