Communications Internship @ Unlocking Potential

Unlocking Potential is located in the historic City of Alexandria, Virginia just across the Potomac from Washington, D.C.  Our office is steps from where George Washington convened in the evenings to talk politics and local news. Their mission is focused on building the leadership and problem-solving capacity of other non-profit teams. They need the brightest and most capable by our side to make that vision real. The Unlocking Potential team is hiring a Communications Intern.

This team member will assist the Communications Manager and Press Secretary on a variety of communications and marketing responsibilities. Interns will receive a stipend and can work flexible hours based on their academic programming, though they are very willing for an intern to be on-site full-time. They frequently host team happy hours and off-site bonding events, and you’ll be able to learn in an atmosphere that offers you flexibility and growth opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Copy editing blog posts and op-eds
  • Developing a daily news digest for the organization
  • Writing and editing sections of our newsletters
  • Researching specific publications, persons of interest or concepts to aid with production of communications and marketing materials
  • Creating and editing UP program communications and marketing materials
  • Research for talking points or earned media pitches

Qualifications

  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and respond to requests in a timely fashion is paramount
  • Clear and concise writer with demonstrated ability to write for a variety of mediums
  • A keen eye for copy editing
  • Being able to adapt to a dynamic environment with some interruptions
  • Clear understanding of social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn
  • Experience developing content and messaging for websites, social media, newsletters or media pitches a plus
  • Experience with squarespace, art19, sprout social and/or survey monkey tools a plus
  • Prior internship experience in a communications role with another nonprofit a plus
  • Sense of humor a must
