Dan Reed is the program director of Planet Forward, an environmental storytelling platform housed in the School of Media and Public Affairs (SMPA) at the George Washington University.
Since joining in 2013, Dan has elevated Planet Forward into an important global convener and digital platform. Planet Forward’s mission is to inspire and empower the next generation of storytellers focused on environment, science and sustainability. Planet Forward publishes original, student-produced media on the environment and sustainability and is partnered with more than 25 colleges and universities across the country. Under Dan’s direction, Planet Forward has received more than $3 million in support from corporations, individuals, foundations and organizations.
Dan has overseen five Planet Forward Summits — an annual, national conference on environmental storytelling that brings together world-leading journalists, content creators, corporate leaders, entrepreneurs, researchers and college students in Washington, D.C. He leads and organizes Planet Forward’s storytelling expeditions that have taken students all over the world and the United States, from the Amazon rainforest in Brazil to the inside passage of Alaska.
He is a frequent guest lecturer on sustainability and environmental storytelling, having presented at major conferences and at academic institutions like Middlebury College and SUNY’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Dan is also a Lecturer at SMPA, teaching “Sustainability Reporting” with SMPA’s Director and Planet Forward founder, Frank Sesno.
Dan proudly served in the first White House intern class for the Obama Administration as a video intern in the White House Photo Office, under the direction of Pete Souza. He holds a master’s degree in Legislative Affairs from GW’s Graduate School of Political Management and a B.S. in Communication Studies from Bridgewater College in Virginia.
