SMPA Career Access Network

The SMPA Career Access Network (CAN) enhances the value of an SMPA education by supporting experiential learning, enhancing professional connections and creating community among current students and alumni. SMPA CAN has two components: an internship fund and mentoring program.

SMPA CAN Internship Fund

The SMPA CAN Internship Fund, J. Michael Shanahan Journalism Internship Fund and KWT Global Fund for Strategic Communication Internships support unpaid and low-paid summer internship opportunities for rising juniors and seniors. The award application opens each spring semester with stipends ranging from $1,000 to $3,000.

The SMPA CAN Internship Fund awards recipients are judged based on merit, professional promise, and need. The J. Michael Shanahan Journalism Internship Fund is open to rising seniors, applicants must be in good academic standing and interning for an established media organization. The Segal Career Access Fund provides support for students pursuing an internship in journalism or political communication.

This summer, I was fortunate to work on the communications team at Invariant. In my role as a political communications consultant, I supported seven client portfolios across the defense, media, artificial intelligence, and education industries. Despite being the youngest on the team, I was never treated as such, and was given real responsibility along with every opportunity to prove myself.

I'm deeply grateful to the SMPA CAN Internship Fund for making this summer possible. It reflects the support SMPA has given me throughout my time at GW, both in the classroom, in my career, and beyond.
