A short missive for a short week.
Wednesday will mark about the halfway point in your syllabi - congratulations, you made it this far. By now we’ve all hit a pretty good rhythm. You’ve probably turned in a few assignments or taken some tests or quizzes. You, your professors, and your classmates know what to expect from each other. The opening weeks of uncertainty are gone and the dread of final exams and papers hasn’t quite arrived. We’re in the thick of it.
This Thursday and Friday are GW’s fall break. It may not feel like much of a break - most of you don’t have classes on Fridays anyway, many of you have jobs or internships that won’t stop, and everyone has assignments they should be working on. Nevertheless, it’s a chance to get out of your normal routine. Use the few hours you would have spent in class checking out a museum you haven’t been to. Poke around bookstores (I’m a big fan of Solid State and Lost City). Find a neighborhood you haven’t explored or take a walk in Rock Creek Park. Use the small pocket of time to get off campus and out of Foggy Bottom, there’s a lot going on in DC this month, much of it free. Then come back next Monday rested and ready for whatever the rest of the fall has in store.
