Curd Knüpfer joined SMPA as a postdoctoral scientist in August 2017. He received his Ph.D. in political science from the Freie Universität Berlin with a dissertation on “Right-Wing Realities? News Media Fragmentation, Conservatism, and the Framing of US Foreign Policy.”

During his time at the Freie Universität, 2010 – 2017, he taught various undergraduate and graduate-level courses on U.S. media & foreign policy, theories of press-state relations and political communication. He also served as a frequent contributor to German and international media reports on U.S. politics. Prior to moving to Washington D.C., his last research project focused on the implications of the Trump presidency for U.S.-German cultural relations.

While at SMPA he will be working with Robert Entman on research focusing on the language used by political parties and in public discourse about inequality. He will also conduct research about the rise of right-wing populism caused by the fragmentation of liberal institutions and media systems.
