Anders Gyllenhaal, an experienced newsroom leader and investigative reporter, is the spring 2018 Shapiro Fellow at the George Washington University’s School of Media and Public Affairs.

A GW alumnus, Gyllenhaal is currently senior editor and director of leadership development at McClatchy and previously served six years as vice president of news, leading editorial operations and navigating the digital landscape at the nation’s third-largest newspaper company.

"We are delighted to welcome back Anders to his alma mater so that he can share his experience working on the front-lines of the digital transformation of newsrooms and news reporting," said SMPA Director Frank Sesno.

As the Shapiro Fellow, Gyllenhaal will teach “New Information Landscape,” a course on the digital transformation of newsrooms and news consumers, and participate in events with students and faculty.

He has held leadership positions at five newsrooms across the country, including serving as the executive editor of The Miami Herald and the editor and senior vice president of The Star Tribune in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Prior to serving in newsroom leadership, Gyllenhaal spent two decades as a journalist and editor, including time as an investigative reporter at The Miami Herald.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from GW and is currently chair of the board at the Poynter Institute and a member of the advisory boards at the American Society of News Editors Foundation and Inter-American Press Association.
