About the Poll

The GW Politics Poll is a collaborative research project managed by GW's School of Media and Public Affairs, Department of Political Science and Graduate School of Political Management. The poll seeks to advance our understanding of American politics and public affairs by generating timely and rigorous data and analysis. The results will be a resource for research by students and scholars as well as political practitioners and observers.

The poll examines a variety of topic areas in politics and public affairs. For the launch of the poll in 2018, four surveys were administered to the same group of respondents to track their views during and after the midterm election campaign.

The Politics Poll serves as a research resource for GW faculty and graduate students who are invited to submit proposals for questions to be included in upcoming surveys.

The academic, nonpartisan research poll is conducted by YouGov, a respected leader in online polling. The YouGov survey methodology (PDF) uses “sample matching” based on a sampling frame of U.S. citizens constructed from the 2016 American Community Survey to select a representative sample. A variety of methods are used to recruit individuals to participate in online panels.

The GW Politics Poll continues the strong tradition of public opinion research at GW, which includes the GW Battleground Poll, a nationally recognized series of surveys conducted by Republican pollster Ed Goeas of The Tarrance Group and Democratic pollster Celinda Lake of Lake Research Partners. The final edition of the GW Battleground Poll was released in March 2018.
