SMPA Director Frank Sesno sits down with National Council member, journalist, and author A'Lelia Bundles to discuss the new Netflix series and re-released book of "Self Made" about her great-great-grandmother Madam C.J. Walker. Ms. Walker was successfully the first female self-made millionaire in America creating a hair care empire through the business she founded, Madam C. J. Walker Manufacturing Company. She was also a strong advocate for civil rights, the arts, and women’s financial independence.
Ms. Bundles originally published the book about her great-great-grandmother "On Her Own Ground" and then it was re-released in March as "Self Made." The Netflix series, inspired by the life of Madam C.J. Walker, stars Octavia Spencer, Tiffany Haddish, Carmen Ejogo and was produced by Lebron James.
Director Sesno and Ms. Bundles discuss fact vs. fiction, her role in the making of the popular new series, and how important it is to tell the truth about a historic figure.
