Thank you for your continued support of the SMPA community and commitment to helping our students thrive.
Campus is as busy as ever - our students are thinking critically about the issues affecting our world and engaging closely with the leading minds in journalism and political communication. I hope that you will come back to visit campus soon and perhaps attend one of our events.

School Spotlights
New SMPA Conversation Series Aims to Promote Civil Discourse
The Frank Sesno Newsmaker Conversation Series, supported by alumni Ted Segal and Meredith Perla Segal, will showcase leading voices in politics and culture and will aim to promote critical civil discourse, public understanding and the enrichment of student experiences at GW.
John Sutter Is the Inaugural Ted Turner Visiting Professor of Environmental Media
SMPA welcomes the award-winning journalist to the endowed professorship named after the CNN founder and conservationist. Sutter's body of work on the climate crisis and the environment has been widely recognized and awarded.
Cokie and Steve Roberts SMPA Student Support Fund Launched to Support SMPA Students
Named in honor of groundbreaking broadcast journalist, the late Cokie Roberts, and her husband, Steve Roberts, the J.B. and M.C. Shapiro Professor of Media and Public Affairs, the Cokie and Steve Roberts SMPA Student Support Fund will provide support for SMPA undergraduate students as they pursue their education at GW.
The purpose of this fund is to support students facing financial hardship, including unmet need and financial emergencies. In the spirit of Cokie and Steve, the fund will support as many students as possible each semester and students with the greatest need will be given priority. Cokie and Steve Roberts SMPA Student Support Fund awards typically range up to $7,500. You can support the fund here.
SMPA Welcomes 2023 Terker Fellows
Katherine Miller, a leader in helping socially responsible companies address the world’s most pressing problems and Molly O’Toole, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who chronicles the human impact of immigration, are the School of Media and Public Affairs 2022-2023 Terker Distinguished Fellows.
Katherine and Molly will play in an important role in the SMPA community, joining in classroom discussions, participating in public events, and working closely with SMPA students. Read more here.
Alumni Class Notes
Meredith Grossman Anders, BA ‘99, (formerly Meredith Grossman Dubner) married Darren Anders in May 2022. They live in Chicago with their five teenage children.
Ethan Bursofsky, BA ‘14, has been promoted to Branch Chief in charge of the Summer Work Travel and Camp Counselor programs in the Office of Private Sector Exchange Program Administration within the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in the U.S. Department of State.
Ashley Carufel, BA ‘11, joined True Anthem as a Senior Customer Strategist. She partners with major media brands such as AP, CBS and Dotdash Meredith to efficiently scale traffic and automate social media workflows through AI optimizations.
Kendrick Chang, BA ‘19, is now an associate attorney practicing law at the law firm Watanabe Ing LLP in Honolulu, Hawaii. Kendrick is also one of the volunteer co-chairs of the GW Hawaii Alumni Network and can be reached at kchangwik [dot] com.
Jim Clarke, BA ‘87, has been at The Associated Press for 30 years and is currently the managing director for local markets, overseeing a part of the U.S. revenue team. He lives in Arvada, Colo., with his wife Jennifer.
Harry Cook, BA ‘97, a partner at a boutique real estate firm in Philadelphia. He recently secured a statewide top 100 verdict in a real estate fraud case. He's an active booster of GW Rugby and credits his time with the club as essential to his professional development.
Daniel Curran, BA ’10, MA ‘11, shares that after 7 years at Boeing, he has moved to McKinsey & Co. in November to be the firm's Director of Federal Affairs.
George Dobbins, BA ‘16, is practicing real estate law in Rochester, NY and just celebrated his third wedding anniversary with the girl he took to the junior prom. Hope you are all doing well!
C. Jeffrey Eshelman, BA ‘94, has been elected CEO & president of the Independent Petroleum Association of America, representing and advocating for the companies that develop 90 percent of US natural gas and oil wells.
Shilo Groover, BA ‘03, shares that “…this has been a big year!” She married her childhood sweetheart, Paul, in March, and is expecting a baby boy next year. Shilo recently launched a new newscast at her hometown TV station, WBRC.
Robert Hammond, BA ‘02, recently joined Mercury Public Affairs as a Managing Director.
Emily Harrison, BA ‘18, is a Senior Digital Strategist on the email team at Middle Seat Consulting, where she managed the email programs for John Fetterman's Senate campaign and Katie Porter's re-election campaign, among others.
Hunter Ihrman, BA ‘20, has been promoted to Director of Policy Communications for the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. Hunter was also appointed to the Virginia Board of Conservation and Recreation for a 4-year term by Governor Glenn Youngkin.
Aliya Karim, BA ’13, MA ‘14, is the Associate Director of Social Media at NowThis, where she oversees the distribution of daily news and trending content across Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. She lives with her husband in the Chicagoland area.
Alexandra Larkin, BA ‘12, is an Associate in the Taxation & Estates department at Meister Seelig & Fein LLP in New York City.
William Lennon, BA ‘19, wrote investigative stories that led to the passage of the Sanctuary Values Act, a law restricting cooperation between Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the D.C. Department of Corrections. He also covered Jan. 6 for the Daily Beast.
Dillon Lewis, BA ‘16, joined Chautauqua Institution as Director of Advancement Communications in May 2022. He was previously Director of Marketing and Development at NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists.
Amanda Lindner, BA ‘10, has accepted a position as Principal of Development Communications for the Northwell Health Foundation.
Stacy Marshall, BA ‘96, joined INCLUDEnyc in October, 2022 as the Executive Director of Parent and Family Engagement. Stacy and her team support K-12 students with disabilities and their families throughout New York City.
Kristina Messner, BA ‘90, in June, launched Messner Media Group LLC, specializing in public relations for aerospace, defense and emerging technology clients. The agency's launch was recognized by coverage in AdWeek, Capital Communicator and O'Dwyers.
Bailey Mohr, BA ‘15, served as Senior Advisor for Digital to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's campaign during the 2022 election cycle.
Marissa Moran Gantman, BA ‘10, moved to Colorado in 2022 and works as Strategic Communications Director for RMI, a nonprofit dedicated to the global clean energy transition.
Henry Morillo, BA ‘13, continues to produce unscripted television content across a variety of genres. Most recently, he was Supervising Producer for the 24th season of "Big Brother" on CBS, as well as a new survival challenge show soon to premiere on TBS.
Tony Palermo, BA ‘91, MPA ‘93, is Assistant Director for the City of Fort Myers Community Development Department and served four weeks at Lee County Emergency Operations Center as a liaison between the City and the County in response to Hurricane Ian.
Lynn Pellicano, BA ‘07, three years ago, was asked by a management consulting firm to create a market research vertical in their company for one division. Lynn was just promoted to director of market research and global head of their newly formed Market Research Center of Excellence.
Lauren Perez, BA ‘21, is a second year law student at New York University School of Law.
John Perrino, BA ‘15, is a policy analyst at the Stanford Internet Observatory leading policy engagement and communications for online trust and safety issues.
Christopher Peterson, BA ‘97, works in the film/television/emerging media industry at Nice Shoes, a New York City - based creative shop and post production facility. He is also an executive board member and board secretary of the Post New York Alliance.
Laura Shuey-Kostelac, BA ‘14, MA ‘15, was recently promoted to the role of Partner, Global Public Affairs at FINN Partners.
Lisa Surhio (formerly Stronawski), BA ‘01, is a City Magistrate in Tucson, Arizona. She presides over the City of Tucson Mental Health Court and the Pima County Consolidated Misdemeanor Problem Solving Court.
Drew Trachtenberg, BA ‘75, is happily retired and living back in his hometown of Philadelphia after long stints as a reporter/editor/executive producer at Dow Jones and CNN. Drew still writes occasional freelance articles on personal finance.
Michael Valerio, BA ‘10, joined CNN Newsource as a correspondent based in Los Angeles. Since March 2022, Valerio covered the repatriation of American World War II remains from the South Pacific, the Uvalde school shooting investigation and climate change in the West.
Lisa Ann Wissink, BA ‘93, was recently named Managing Director and Co-Lead, U.S. Financial Services, for Edelman Smithfield, a financial communications boutique that specializes in the financial markets and strategic situations.
Faculty Kudos
- Catie Bailard published Do Local Newspapers Mitigate the Effects of the Polarized National Rhetoric on COVID-19? in The International Journal of Press/Politics.
- Imani M. Cheers' exhibit "Framing Fatherhood" celebrated Black masculinity and fatherhood. The exhibit was featured on CBS Mornings, the Washington Post, and others. She also spoke to CBS "Saturday Morning" about celebrities on the ballot.
- Jesse J. Holland is a columnist for MSNBC and has penned a number of op-eds.
- Peter Loge was named a senior fellow at the Agirre Lehendakaria Center in Bilbao in the area of rhetorical construction of Basque identity.
- Efrat Nechushtai published Before reception: Trust in the news as infrastructure in Journalism. Her paper, "Making Messages Private: The Formation of Postal Privacy and Its Relevance for Digital Surveillance" was also selected to receive the Smithsonian National Postal Museum Award for Scholarship in Postal History.
- Jason Osder's film Condition/Decondition premiered at Prismatic Ground. You can learn more about his upcoming film, Who Killed Alex Odeh? here.
- Lisa Palmer wrote an article for nature, "Storing frozen water to adapt to climate change." She also co-authored the Salon article, "Trolling Is taking a toll on science journalism" with Silvio Waisbord.
- Ethan Porter co-authored a study that was quoted in the NPR article, "Factual climate change reporting can influence Americans positively, but not for long." Porter also collaborated with Catie Bailard and Kimberly Gross on Fact-checking Trump’s election lies can improve confidence in US elections: Experimental evidence in the Harvard Kennedy School Misinformation Review.
- Frank Sesno hosted a 4-episode special on the "Healthy You" podcast, entitled "Confronting our Disease of Disinformation." He was also selected to host a 4-part lecture series at the White House Historical Association.
- Thom Shanker was interviewed about the new cold war with Putin for a podcast at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute.
- Janet Steele interviewed Malaysian author Preeta Samarasan and Michael Vatikiotis, the former editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review, at the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival. Read more about Dr. Steele's current international work here.
- John Sutter wrote an article for CNN titled, "New report paints dire picture of America's future as climate crisis accelerates."
- Cheryl W. Thompson's report for NPR titled “Heat is killing workers in the U.S. — and there are no federal rules to protect them” received an IRE award. Thompson also served as a juror for 2022's Pulitzer Prizes and moderated the D.C. Mayoral and Attorney General Forums.
- Rebekah Tromble published Advocating for platform data access: challenges and opportunities for academics seeking policy change in Politics and Governance.
- Silvio Waisbord published a number of articles including: Alternative Media/Journalism and the Communicative Politics of Contestation in Digital Journalism; Why collective resilience in journalism matters: A call to action in global media development in Journal of Applied Journalism & Media Studies; and Can Journalists Be Safe in a Violent World? in Journalism Practice. He was also selected President of the International Communication Association.
- William Youmans published Framing Covid-19: Constitutional Versus Demagogic Rhetoric in Presidential Messaging in International Journal of Communication.
